Open Art Studio

6-30-20 Update Creative Arts Studio Hours Open 11-4:30 pm

We are open as Dave is setting up the outdoor seating!

Weather permitting, there will be a total of 6 outdoor, socially-distanced tables. (3 in front of our studio, and another 3 in front of the old Town Tavern. Please see below for more information.)

Creative Arts Studio Reopening!
We have slowly been reopening the studio to allow for in-studio creating. Pottery Painting and Mosaic Art projects are now available. Glass Fusing will soon follow!
Reservations are required to ensure a socially distanced table is available for you! Please see below.
Wheel-throwing workshops are also beginning to resume. Please understand that priority will be given to all students who were in midst of a session (when shutdowns began), followed by students who were registered and waiting to begin their session (again which shutdowns prevented from running).
Unfortunately, The Wax Hand Machine will remain closed due to the physical contact required between staff and guests, as well as the inability to sufficiently sterilize liquid melted wax.
New Studio Hours*
Monday-Saturday from 11am-4:30pm.
Each day we will offer two opportunities to come in to create. Each session will last for 2 hours. (You certainly do not need to stay the entire time; we just don’t like to rush the creative process!)
Session 1: 11:30am-1:30pm
Session 2: 2-4pm
*We strongly encourage anyone who wishes to create to make a reservation to ensure that a table is available.
Please call (248) 544-2234 to reserve a table and let us know which day and which session you wish to reserve. Finally, please indicate if your preference is for an indoor or outdoor table. If you are leaving a message, please also include your name and phone number.
Outdoor Seating!
The Royal Oak City Commission recently passed a resolution to assist businesses impacted by the pandemic, the opportunity to apply for a temporary use permit allowing for outdoor seating. We are very pleased that the city has approved our application. Weather permitting and social distancing honored, we will have 3 outdoor tables in front of our studio.
Furthermore, and sadly, our next-door neighbor Town Tavern did close permanently during the shutdown. Both their location and ours share a landlord who has graciously granted us use of the patio space in front of this restaurant (until a new tenant is found). With social distancing in mind, we can safely offer 3 more outdoor tables for creating.
Safety Measures
We care deeply about the health and safety of our wonderful staff and patrons, as well as the community in which we live and work. For this reason, all staff will be wearing a mask, and we kindly ask that you do so as well. Furthermore, temperatures of all staff, as well as all patrons will be taken upon entering the studio. We regretfully ask anyone who is unable to comply with these safety measures to postpone any visits until such safety protocols are no longer required!
Our online store will remain open for those who wish to continue creating at home. Pottery Art Kit site: https://potteryartkits.com/.
Sincerely,
Kristin & Dave and Creative Arts Studio staff

Christmas Family

It’s time for a new, old tradition #CeramicChristmasTrees

The Christmas holidays have long been connected to tradition and heritage, yet not just of the tradition itself, but of the family traditions that we develop along the way.  It could be the tradition of taking a family trip out of state to see some distant relative, or it could be an old-fashioned turkey dinner at Grandma’s house for the holidays; whatever your tradition, the holidays are here for the enjoying. Here at the Creative Arts Studio in historic, Royal Oak, Michigan, we are ready for your visit, to create a new family tradition – handcrafted, Ceramic Christmas trees.

And to the next generation of artisans, and the next…

As greater Detroit, Michigan’s go-to destination for new holiday traditions and Christmas craft-making, the Creative Arts Studio has something here for everyone to enjoy. The studio offers classes in ornament painting, pottery painting, pallet board painting, canvas painting, wheel throwing and yes, even classes in painting Ceramic Christmas trees!  Our staff instructors are skilled artisans who are passionate about their craft and of imparting their time-honed tradition to the next generation of crafters and painters.

Hand-crafting is the hot topic of the hour…

Perhaps, it’s that unique holiday tradition we partake in as a family – that is indeed the “Most Wonderful” thing about this time of year. So is the art of hand-painting ceramic Christmas trees. It’s been a long-held tradition that’s continued from the time of our grandparents unto this day. How is it that a tradition dating back decades has not only continued up until now but has, in fact, experienced a rebound in renewed interest among younger generations?  “The answer is simple – it’s the hands-on, do-it-yourself craftsmanship that’s involved in the process painting pottery with family and friends, and then having it fired in a kiln, that family members find to be rewarding and they remember the most.” says the staff at the Creative Arts Studio

Invitation to experience a new tradition…

When visiting Detroit, Michigan or whether you’re a native Royal Oak resident who’s looking for something decidedly different to do for the holidays…then perhaps it’s time to break tradition and start forming a new one. The tradition of painting pottery is stronger than ever here at the Creative Arts Studio and we invite you and yours to celebrate this time-honored tradition with us… ‘round the craft-making, dining table.

Your turn to pass along the torch of tradition…

As your extended, holiday family, the Creative Arts Studio welcomes you into our studio home for a Detroit, Michigan Christmas tradition like no other.  Come on in and paint a ceramic Christmas tree and you’ll discover why some traditions are worthy of our attention and are deserving to be passed along to the next generation of future artisans…
