All About Wheel Throwing

Wheel Throwing Classes Art

If you come, it will be built…

The act and art of building something by hand is a trend that’s gaining more popularity among families today. Perhaps, it’s the disconnect from the digital and a reconnect to physical that has attributed to the trend’s continued growth. It really comes down to the fact that people enjoy the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that comes from working with their hands. Yet, it’s not always practical or convenient to take time out to do this, let alone finding the facilities, where building things by hand is allowed.  Enter, the Creative Arts Studio of Royal Oak, Michigan where to build something beautiful and memorable, you have to get your hands dirty, as in wheel-throwing, dirty.

When shape takes form…

Wheel throwing is the process of shaping and forming clay into usable shapes on the pottery wheel. Also, wheel throwing is used for adding the finishing touches to pottery such as lines or designs. As the potter’s wheel spins, small indentations or surface changes are quickly applied to the clay, where the shape and features begin to take form. In wheel throwing, the design applications are as wide and varied as the imagination of the potter.  Here at the Creative Arts Studio near Detroit, Michigan, our potter’s wheel is always spinning, waiting for you to get your hands dirty at designing cool new things!

Wheel Throwing For Kids

The potter’s imprint…

The craftsman of old believed that when they worked with their hands on a project or an object they were actually infusing/adding a piece of themselves into the objects they were working on. It’s as if, they had imprinted a part of themselves onto the object of their creation and that their spirit and essence – live on in their workmanship. While the staff here at the Creative Arts Studio of Royal Oak, Michigan know the objects themselves may be inanimate, it’s the life that’s shaped and spun into them during wheel throwing that does in fact – bear the spirit and essence of the potter.

The reward of working with one’s hands…

If working with your hands on a project or craft has stirred your interest, then wheel throwing is for you! If you’re looking for a new family activity to partake in that will be as rewarding an experience as it is a family-bonding experiment, then wheel-throwing is also for you. If you are looking to satisfy your personal sense of accomplishment, then wheel throwing is equally for you!  The potter’s wheel is always making its rounds at the Creative Arts Studio – Royal Oak, Michigan’s own, public potter’s studio.

Experience family fun in a whole new way…

As this festive, holiday season fast approaches, we invite you and yours out to our studio to experience family fun in an entirely new way. The Creative Arts Studio presents painting and pottery classes to help you hone your hard-earned craft. Our classes are taught by skillful artisans who work closely with new students to provide them a well-rounded grasp on the features and fundamentals of wheel throwing.  By the end of the class, you will know how to create, shape, and design by hand – a pottery piece you can be proud of and one that’s infused with your creative essence…

In communities where creativity is encouraged and the arts flourish, there is a thriving energy that draws visitors, inspires residents, and promotes the local economy from within. When the arts flourish, so also does the community. Creativity begets creativity and it is this collective, creative conscience that the local community “taps” into, which often results in new people trying their wings at the arts for the first time.

A Canvas Painting Story

All About Canvas Painting

Galleries around the world tell their stories – the timeless tales of talented artists, who paint their visual worlds on pages of canvas for all to read.  At the stroke of a brush, colors become words that portray the plot in picturesque, prose. Tones, like their plot counterparts – twist and turn the canvas storyline into a superfluity of shades, depicting themes and scenes that only the painter’s brush could design. Each scene, like a panoramic performance, is played out on the canvas – where perspectives are the players, depth depicts dialogue, and texture tells the artist’s, visual tale.

This world is but a canvas to our imagination. Henry David Thoreau

Canvas Painting

Like a portal peering into the painter’s creative-consciousness, the canvas proudly displays the human experience as characterized by a broad palette of emotional color tones that bring the story to life. The canvas is then the creator’s showcase of master-storytelling, where each stroke sketches a thousand words, and each brush builds up to a climactic close. Upon whence the story concludes, the completed work is a telling of how a blank sheet can become a beautiful canvas of possibility, not through printed words, but through painted worlds…

Canvas Painting

I dream of painting and then I paint my dream. Vincent van Gogh

The majestic worlds created by the canvas masters themselves are beyond imaginable, yet fully believable. Admirers can nearly sense the sting of the frigid canvas’ cold front blowing across the snowbound mountain village scene. Onlookers can almost taste and smell the Thanksgiving turkey being served up on the canvas dining table scene, complete with all the fixings of food, friends, and family fun. Viewers can nearly hear the tonal dynamics of each metal string as they vibrate their signature vibrational frequencies across the canvas wooden soundboard.

Painter

Such Mastercrafters of canvas worlds, like the visionary Vincent van Gogh, opened up our eyes to The Starry Night swirling about and above us in all its unrivaled resplendence. We have walked along The Avenue with Oscar Claude Monet, creator of finely crafted canvas realms that have yet to be completely chartered. Then we are swept up by the sounds of Pablo Picasso’s Post-Impressionist universe, where the timeless tunes from The Old Guitarist are still being aired across the canvas‘ color washed wavebands.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Pablo Picasso

Their canvas like our canvas is their world.  And like they, we pour ourselves into the act and art of creating. It’s as if to create is encoded into our intelligently, intertwined, genetic sequencing. It is this innate need to create, that showcases the zenith of the human emotional experience. This canvas of our own crafting and workmanship is a life lived with creative- ntention.

Just as the master crafters of those still uncharted, canvas worlds gave us a glimpse into their creative consciousness.  We should peer into one of our most innate and core higher callings to create with intention.  Like the masterpieces of old, may your life’s canvas be colored with the broadest pallete of creative intention. Likewise, may you peer through the portal of your own creative consciousness to see the yet uncharted worlds that await your discovery.

Just as there’s a need to create, compelling us forward, there also exists a higher calling, captivating us onward.  It’s a clarion call that still echoes true today.  It’s to create with intent and showcase the best of ourselves to an onlooking world, exhibiting our true higher colors on this canvas display called life…

All About Scout Outings and Fun!

Badges for the best of us

Boys and girl scout clubs of America have been a staple part of American culture and society for many years.  They have been instrumental in building character in kids and teaching them values, respect for nature, survival basics, hard-work, independence, and teamwork too. As scouts develop, learn new skills, and take on new responsibilities, they achieve merit badges. These badges are important to scout troops because they represent a new level of personal development in the scout’s life.  The Creative Arts Studio in Royal Oak, Michigan is proud to offer programs to help our scouts earn the merits necessary to receive a painting or pottery badge.

Community involvement for a creative cause

Our painting and pottery badge programs are designed around the unique requirements of each badge.  As a local business here in Royal Oak, Michigan, the Creative Arts Studio enjoys being involved in the community and helping scouts along on their personal development path.  We have also set aside “Badge Days”, where scouts can join and combine with other troops to earn their badges. Scouts may also schedule a private booking for themselves to come in and perform the necessary requirements for badges to be awarded.

The rewards of duty, the value of artistry

What’s great about our scout badge program is that it’s centered on and around creativity, art, and personal expression.  By awarding scouts who have met the requirements for a painting or pottery badge, they are taught the value of art, of working with their hands, and of course, the importance of having fun while doing their Scout’s Duty.  As always, the staff here at the Creative Arts Studio welcomes a “just-for-fun” visit to our studio in Royal Oak, Michigan, where being creative is cool!

A heritage of honor

The Scout clubs of America have a proud heritage of kids who are respectful and responsible.  These model youth often grow up to become citizens who contribute to society in meaningful ways. The values gleaned as a scout during these formative years often transfers into his/her adult life, helping mold and shape their character in the later years.  This heritage of honor continues to this day, instilling greatness into the youth of America that will follow them their life through. Partnering with the Boys and Girl Scouts of America in putting together a scout’s badge program has been a Highmark for the Creative Arts Studio.

The well-known catch phrase, “Scouting is Outing” is as apt today as it was a hundred years ago.

Online meets offline

With today’s tech-centric society, our youth are more digitally-developed and connected than ever before.  When so much of our youth’s time is spent online for school and for leisure, it’s beneficial for them to equally spend time, offline – crafting with their hands, taking in nature and working together on a group project with friends. The Creative Arts Studio helps these connected kids – to reconnect with their creative sides, teaching them the value of having balance in a busy world.

Recreating the creative connection

Helping people to reconnect to their creative sides has been the aim and mission of the Creative Arts Studio since we opened our doors. WIth our merit-badge program, scouts can learn the benefits of having balance while they experience the beauty of art.  Equally, these scouts are rewarded for their work – with the satisfaction that comes from crafting something with their own hands. Then, their hard work is rewarded again… with an award – a merit-badge of honor for their creative accomplishments. It is this reconnect to the creative that helps make the Creative Arts Studio – the ultimate place for your next scout outing!

The inner artist within us all

There’s something innate within each of us – a desire to create and express that compels us towards the arts. While art comes in many forms and can be expressed in an equal number of creative ways; it is the individual’s personal approach that makes artistic expression such a powerful part of the human experience. One such form of artistic expression is pallet board painting. Fun and Easy Pottery Painting Techniques!

7:30am Saturday morning: Wake up to your three kids bounding into your bedroom, mistaking your bed for a trampoline.

8:00: You finally get up, although all senses are murky until the coffee is poured.

8:30: Your brain is awake the kids are ready to be entertained!

8:45-11:00: Coloring books, 9 games of hide and seek, you try to make that homemade playdough you saw on Pinterest, clean up the mess after said playdough experiment, resolve an argument over tv show choices, take away TV privileges, and finally lunch.

11:00: The Creative Arts Studio opens and your day just got a whole lot easier!

11:30: Arrive at the studio and one of our cheerful staff members helps get the whole family started on their projects

11:45: The family is still trying to decide what to paint on their pottery and then you remember this witty blog post on the Creative Arts Studio website that had a bunch of great technique ideas…

Bubble Painting: Ask a staff member to mix up bubbles and then do just like the CAS staff member in the video below!

Marbling: Swirl some paint on a paper plate and then transfer to a flat piece!

Resist: Ask a staff member to print your shape of choice. Apply your the color you’d like your shape to be and then apply your shape cut out of paper by dipping it in water and then placing it on your piece. Paint your background color on top and wait for it to dry. Remove your paper shape to reveal a picture perfect design every time!

Polka Dots: Ask a staff member for our round sponges on a stick or just use the back of a rounded brush.

Stencils and Stamps: We have drawers upon drawers of stencils and stamps to use. When stenciling, first trace with a marker (markers disappear during the firing process) and then paint on top. For stamps, paint the stamp, apply it to your pottery, and then add your second and third coats with a brush.
